A leaning headstone is upsetting to see, and it can also be a safety concern. The good news is that most leaning memorials can be safely re-levelled and re-fixed.
What makes a memorial move
Ground settles naturally after a burial. Sussex's clay soils swell in wet winters and shrink in dry summers, and tree roots and old fixings add to the movement.
Signs to look out for
- The stone tilts forwards, backwards or to one side
- Gaps between the headstone and its base
- Kerbs that have spread or sunk
- Loose or rocking sections when gently touched
What a repair involves
We lift the memorial where needed, prepare a firm, level foundation, then re-fix it to current safety standards with appropriate fixings. Any required cemetery permissions are discussed with you first.
Don't try to push it straight
Pushing a heavy stone can make it fall or crack. If you're worried, call us on 01273 950 717 for advice — repairs and re-levelling are a core part of what we do.
